Akshat Purohit, founder of Vivaah India, makes the case for India as the world''s greatest destination wedding location — drawing on 18 years of experience planning luxury celebrations for NRI couples from London to Sydney to New York.
I have been asked this question hundreds of times, by couples sitting across from me in London, New York, Toronto, Sydney, and Dubai: why India?
Why not Tuscany, where the light is golden and the wine is extraordinary? Why not Bali, where the temples are ancient and the flowers are always in bloom? Why not the Maldives, where the water is the colour of a dream?
My answer is always the same: because nowhere else in the world offers what India offers. Not even close.
After eighteen years of planning destination weddings for NRI couples — over 200 celebrations across Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala, and beyond — I have developed a clear and considered view of why India is, and will remain, the world's greatest destination wedding location. This is that view.
The Venues Are Incomparable
Let me begin with the most obvious point, because it is also the most important: India's wedding venues are, in aggregate, the most extraordinary collection of event spaces on earth.
Consider what is available. A 16th-century Mughal palace on a lake in Udaipur. A 19th-century Maharaja's residence in Jaipur, set on 47 acres of formal gardens. A Portuguese colonial fort in Goa, overlooking the Arabian Sea. A traditional Kerala heritage resort accessible only by boat, set on a private island in the backwaters. A Himalayan retreat above the clouds in Mussoorie.
No other country offers this range, this quality, or this density of extraordinary venues. Italy has beautiful villas. France has magnificent châteaux. But neither can offer a palace on a lake, a fort in the desert, a beach on the Arabian Sea, and a houseboat on a tropical backwater — all within the same country, all within a few hours of each other.
The venues are the foundation of everything. And India's foundation is unmatched.
The Cultural Depth Is Irreplaceable
The second reason is more personal, and more profound.
For NRI couples — people who were born in India or whose parents were born in India, who carry Indian culture in their blood and their memories — a wedding in India is not simply a beautiful event. It is a homecoming.
It is the smell of jasmine and sandalwood. It is the sound of the shehnai at dawn. It is the weight of a grandmother's blessing. It is the sight of a mandap constructed according to traditions that have been observed for thousands of years. It is the feeling of being, for a few extraordinary days, entirely and completely yourself.
No destination wedding in Tuscany or Bali can offer this. The beauty of those places is real, but it is borrowed beauty — a backdrop that has nothing to do with who you are or where you come from. India's beauty is your beauty. It belongs to you.
This is why, in eighteen years of planning, I have never had a couple regret choosing India. I have had couples regret their venue choice, their vendor choices, their timing. I have never had a couple say: we should have gone to Italy.
The Value Is Extraordinary
The third reason is practical, and it matters more than people often admit.
India offers a level of luxury — in venues, in catering, in décor, in service — that is simply not available at equivalent price points anywhere else in the world.
A full buyout of a 5-star palace property in Udaipur, for five days, with 150 guests, will cost between ₹2 crore and ₹4 crore — approximately £200,000 to £400,000 at current exchange rates. For that budget, you will receive a level of service, a quality of venue, and a scale of celebration that would cost three to five times as much in Europe.
The reason is straightforward: India's cost base is lower, its hospitality workforce is larger and more skilled, and its luxury hospitality sector has been investing heavily in quality for the past two decades. The result is a market where extraordinary value is available to couples who know where to look.
This does not mean Indian destination weddings are cheap. The best venues, the best vendors, and the best planners command significant fees. But the relationship between price and quality is more favourable in India than anywhere else in the world.
The Logistics Are More Manageable Than You Think
One of the most common objections I hear from NRI couples considering an India wedding is the logistics concern: India is complicated, the infrastructure is unreliable, the bureaucracy is overwhelming.
This concern is understandable, but it is largely outdated.
India's luxury hospitality infrastructure has transformed in the past decade. The best venues — Taj, Oberoi, ITC, Leela — operate to international standards of service and reliability. The airports serving the major wedding destinations — Udaipur, Jaipur, Goa, Kochi — have been modernised and expanded. The road and rail connections between cities have improved dramatically.
More importantly: a good wedding planner eliminates the logistics problem entirely. When you work with an experienced destination wedding planner in India, you are not navigating the complexity of the country alone. You are working with someone who has done this hundreds of times, who has relationships with every vendor and every venue, and who can resolve any problem — from a delayed flight to a missing florist to a medical emergency — before it becomes a crisis.
The logistics of an India destination wedding are not a reason to choose another country. They are a reason to choose the right planner.
The Food Is the Best in the World
I am aware that this is a subjective claim. I make it anyway.
Indian cuisine — in its full diversity, from the rich Mughlai dishes of Rajasthan to the coconut-based curries of Kerala to the seafood of Goa — is, in my view, the most complex, most varied, and most delicious cuisine on earth. And a destination wedding in India gives you access to this cuisine at its very best: prepared by the finest chefs in the country, using the freshest local ingredients, for guests who may be experiencing it for the first time.
The sadya served at a Kerala wedding — the elaborate vegetarian feast on a banana leaf, with its twenty-odd dishes arranged in a precise order — is one of the great culinary experiences available anywhere in the world. The Rajasthani thali, with its dal baati churma and ker sangri and ghevar, is a revelation for guests who have only encountered Indian food in diaspora restaurants. The Goan seafood — the prawn balchão, the fish curry, the bebinca — is extraordinary.
Food is not a peripheral element of a wedding. It is central to the experience of celebration. And in India, the food is incomparable.
The Moment Is Now
There is one final reason to choose India for your destination wedding, and it is a reason that is specific to this moment in history.
India is, right now, in the middle of a golden age of luxury hospitality. The past decade has seen an extraordinary investment in new and restored properties — Six Senses Fort Barwara in Rajasthan, Raffles Udaipur, Alila Fort Bishangarh, Suján Jawai — that have expanded the range of available venues dramatically. The quality of the best Indian wedding planners, photographers, décor specialists, and caterers has never been higher.
At the same time, the NRI community is larger, more prosperous, and more connected to its Indian heritage than at any previous point. The desire to celebrate in India — to bring family and friends from around the world to the country that shaped who you are — has never been stronger.
The combination of supply and demand, of quality and desire, makes this an extraordinary moment to plan a destination wedding in India. The venues are available. The vendors are exceptional. The planners are experienced. The only question is: are you ready?
